Choosing the Right Coral for Your Reef
Soft Corals & Mushrooms
The most forgiving place to start. Mushrooms like Rhodactis and pincushions, zoanthids and palys, and clove polyps tolerate moderate lighting and a wider range of water parameters, which makes them ideal for newer tanks.
LPS (Large Polyp Stony) Corals
Torches, hammers, frogspawn, Duncans, chalices, and goniopora bring big movement and color. Most do well under moderate light and flow with stable alkalinity and calcium. Give Euphyllia like torches and hammers room, because their sweeper tentacles can sting neighbors.
SPS (Small Polyp Stony) Corals
Acropora and similar species reward experienced reefers with unmatched color, but they need strong lighting, high flow, and very stable parameters. We recommend them for mature, well-established systems.
Acclimation Tips
- Float the bag to match temperature, then slowly add tank water before transferring.
- Dip new corals to help prevent pests hitching a ride.
- Place new pieces lower in the tank and move them up gradually to avoid light shock.
