Description

The Neptune Grouper (Cephalopholis igarashiensis) is one of the most coveted deepwater specimens in the marine aquarium hobby. Pulled from depths that few aquarists ever get to collect from, it wears a striking palette of golden yellow washed with rose and crimson banding, a color combination that looks almost painted on. This is a true showpiece, the kind of centerpiece specimen that defines a high end display.

Beyond the looks, the Neptune Grouper has a bold, curious personality. It will quickly learn to recognize you, come to the front of the glass at feeding time, and command attention in any large system. Once acclimated it is remarkably hardy, making it a rewarding choice for the dedicated keeper ready to give it the space it deserves.

Because it originates from deeper, dimmer waters, it appreciates subdued lighting, stable parameters, and plenty of rockwork to patrol and claim as its own. Give it room to grow and it will reward you for years.

Care at a glance

  • Care level: Moderate
  • Diet: Carnivore. Offer a varied meaty diet of mysis, krill, silversides, and quality frozen or prepared marine foods
  • Temperament: Semi aggressive
  • Reef compatible: With caution. It will not bother corals, but it may view small ornamental shrimp and small tankmates as a meal
  • Minimum aquarium: 180 gallons
  • Maximum size: Around 16 inches
  • Lighting: Low to moderate, subdued preferred
  • Placement: Open swimming space with rockwork and caves

Why buy from The Coral Boutique?

Every live specimen we ship is ethically sourced, quarantined, and conditioned in our system before it ever reaches you. A specimen like the Neptune Grouper gets extra attention, eating well and fully settled, so the one that arrives at your door is healthy, strong, and ready to thrive. When you buy from The Coral Boutique, you are buying with confidence.

Live Arrival Guarantee

Eligible fish orders are covered by our Arrival Guarantee. If there’s an issue on arrival, email clear photos within 4 hours of delivery so our team can review and help. Failed delivery attempts, refused packages, or missed delivery windows may void coverage.

Acclimation

Acclimate fish carefully and introduce them into a stable, established saltwater aquarium. Match temperature and salinity slowly, keep lights low during introduction, and monitor behavior closely after release.

Photography

We photograph our fish under balanced, aquarium-safe lighting to accurately represent their true coloration and patterning. Our goal is to show how each fish will appear in a home reef or marine setup—not under overly blue or altered lighting.

Because fish are active and constantly moving, images are representative of the species and quality you can expect. Every fish is carefully selected for health, coloration, and temperament before shipping.
