Description

Lawnmower Blenny

Transform Your Tank with Nature's Most Diligent Algae Crew

Looking for a hardworking reef tank ally... The Lawnmower Blenny is one of the saltwater aquarium hobby's most beloved and practical additions — a species that earns its keep every single day. With expressive, periscope-like eyes, a mottled brown-and-white pattern that mimics live rock perfectly, and an unmistakable personality, this specimen is as visually engaging as it is functional. It's the rare combination of utility and character that keeps experienced aquarists coming back for one in every build.

Reaching up to 5 inches at full maturity, the Lawnmower Blenny spends its days grazing methodically across rockwork and glass, cropping filamentous and hair algae with remarkable efficiency. It perches, darts, and hops across the aquascape with a curious, almost comical energy that makes it a constant source of activity in the home aquarium. For aquarists who want a specimen that genuinely interacts with its environment — and solves a real problem while doing it — this species delivers every time.

QUICK STATS & CARE GUIDE

  • Common Name: Lawnmower Blenny (Jeweled Blenny, Sailfin Blenny)
  • Current Size: 2–3 inches (juvenile to sub-adult)
  • Care Level: Easy — ideal for beginner to intermediate reef keepers
  • Temperament: Peaceful; may show aggression toward other blennies or similar bottom-dwelling species
  • Diet: Primarily herbivorous — grazes on microalgae, spirulina-based prepared foods, and algae sheets (nori); supplement if natural algae is insufficient
  • Reef Safe: Yes — with caution in low-nutrient systems where algae is scarce, as it may nip at coral polyps when underfed
  • Water Conditions: 72–78°F | Salinity 1.023–1.025 | pH 8.1–8.4 | Nitrates below 20 ppm

Live Arrival Guarantee

Eligible livestock orders are covered by our Live Arrival Guarantee. Photograph the animal in its sealed bag before you open anything, then email that photo with your order number within two hours of delivery. Our team reviews every claim and gets you an answer within one business day. Failed delivery attempts, refused packages, or missed delivery windows may void coverage.

Acclimation

Acclimate fish carefully and introduce them into a stable, established saltwater aquarium. Match temperature and salinity slowly, keep lights low during introduction, and monitor behavior closely after release.

Photography

We photograph our fish under balanced, aquarium-safe lighting to accurately represent their true coloration and patterning. Our goal is to show how each fish will appear in a home reef or marine setup—not under overly blue or altered lighting.

Because fish are active and constantly moving, images are representative of the species and quality you can expect. Every fish is carefully selected for health, coloration, and temperament before shipping.

Healthy Fish Start With Careful Selection.
