Description

The Pincushion Mushroom (Rhodactis sp.) brings rich texture and color to any reef aquarium. Named for the dense, bumpy projections that cover its surface like a cushion of tiny pins, this soft coral mushroom is a standout addition for hobbyists who want movement, depth, and personality in their tank.

Hardy and forgiving, the Pincushion Mushroom is one of the easiest corals to keep, making it a perfect choice for beginners while still earning a place in seasoned reefers' collections. It thrives across a wide range of conditions and rewards you with steady growth, often spreading into a vibrant colony over time.

Care at a glance

  • Care level: Easy, beginner friendly
  • Lighting: Low to moderate
  • Flow: Low to medium
  • Placement: Lower to middle of the aquarium
  • Temperament: Peaceful
  • Diet: Photosynthesis plus occasional supplemental target feeding
  • Reef safe: Yes

Place it on live rock with gentle flow and moderate light, and let it settle in. Avoid high flow areas, which can keep the polyp from fully opening and showing off its full texture. With stable water parameters and a little patience, your Pincushion Mushroom will inflate beautifully and become a living centerpiece in your reef. Each specimen is unique in color and pattern, so the one that arrives at your door is truly one of a kind.
