Chaote Wrasse (Large)

Transform Your Tank with a Rare Wrasse Worth Hunting For

Looking for something genuinely hard to find? The Chaote Wrasse (Macropharyngodon choati) is one of the most sought-after leopard wrasses in the hobby — prized for its intricate, jewel-like patterning of orange, white, and electric blue markings that make it an instant focal point in any reef tank. This is not a species you'll find at your local shop, and large specimens are especially uncommon in the trade. If you've been waiting for the right moment to add something truly exceptional to your saltwater aquarium, this is it.

At large size, this specimen has already cleared the most delicate stage of acclimation, making it a far more confident and rewarding addition to a mature reef. Choati wrasses are active, methodical hunters — constantly combing rockwork and sandbed for small invertebrates — giving your aquarium a sense of constant, natural movement. Their personality is bold without being aggressive, and watching one work through a reef is genuinely captivating for any serious aquarist.

QUICK STATS & CARE GUIDE

  • Common Name: Chaote Wrasse / Choati Leopard Wrasse
  • Current Size: Large (approx. 3–4 inches)
  • Care Level: Intermediate to Advanced — best suited for established reef tanks with stable water parameters
  • Temperament: Peaceful; may be territorial with other leopard wrasses
  • Diet: Carnivore — small invertebrates, mysis shrimp, frozen enriched foods; requires meaty varied diet multiple times daily
  • Reef Safe: With caution — may pick at small ornamental shrimp and tiny snails
  • Water Conditions: 72–78°F | pH 8.1–8.4 | Salinity 1.020–1.025 | High oxygenation; requires a deep sandbed (2+ inches) for sleeping

Acclimation

Acclimate fish carefully and introduce them into a stable, established saltwater aquarium. Match temperature and salinity slowly, keep lights low during introduction, and monitor behavior closely after release.

Photography

We photograph our fish under balanced, aquarium-safe lighting to accurately represent their true coloration and patterning. Our goal is to show how each fish will appear in a home reef or marine setup—not under overly blue or altered lighting.

Because fish are active and constantly moving, images are representative of the species and quality you can expect. Every fish is carefully selected for health, coloration, and temperament before shipping.
